I watched this last night, and as a fifteen-year-old Irish girl, it reflected an Ireland I am not familiar with. However, it is clearly the Ireland that my parents grew up in, and it certainly looked bleak.It looked at many aspects of life in the Ireland of the late 1960s, the resounding theme being the stranglehold of the clergy on the public. It swung from the truly, sadly touching - such as the anonymous interview with the Young Married Woman who was being "driven mad" by her priest's assumed authority over her marital relationships - to the wry and ironic - Fr. Michael Cleary's piety on the subject of marriage raised a smile because of later notoriety for his illegitimate children - to joy, such as that of the young couples at a local dance or the traditional music being played in a crowded pub.The moments which I enjoyed best were the schoolboys being quizzed on the subject of Original Sin. Their earnest expressions, and sometimes half-hidden mischievous grins as they mentioned "really mini-skirts" were enough to make me in part want to laugh, and also want to rage at the Church for filling their heads with that nonsense.It was fascinating to watch and hear, and very interesting for the young Irish person.
