Her break came with Pretty Woman – it was originally a bleak drama, but Disney bought the rights and it became My Fair Hooker. A number of stinkers followed (Hook, Dying Young, Mary Reilly) and after passing up on Shakespeare in Love she won the best actress Oscar for Erin Brockovich. We may have had a different view of her had she taken the lead in Basic Instinct.
